Setting up your first Untangle NGFW: What you need to know

You've just ordered your Untangle NGFW from us and want to know what else you may need or what you need to do once you get your NGFW.

What you'll need:

  • Keyboard
  • Mouse
  • Monitor
  • VGA/HDMI cable (this depends on the unit you get, for example the z-Series uses an HDMI) IMPORTANT Do not use any adapters when connecting this as it can cause issues.
  • Ethernet cable(s)

At this point you'll need to connect the monitor, keyboard, and mouse to the NGFW.

Connect the NGFW to your upstream device using the WAN Ethernet port and cable. When you are in the setup wizard the icon next to the interface will turn green, make sure it is plugged into the 'External' interface. If not you can move the cable around or rename/map the interfaces so it shows the ports correctly.

If you purchased an Untangle NGFW  appliance, it will come pre-installed on your device you don't need to worry about installation. If you DO, then please reference our installation guide which will also walk you through the setup wizard and discuss options for putting it in router vs bridge mode depending on your needs.

During the setup make sure the option for "Connect to Command Center" is selected for the rest of this guide.

Free trial:

Each new installation of NGFW comes with a free 14 day trial so you can mess around with full functionality before you deploy it or decide on purchasing your license.

Command Center:

Once set up you can find your device's UID in Config > About. You'll take that to and add it to your account. From there you can apply your subscription to the device, and you should be ready to start configuring your NGFW. Once your device is on the network, you should be able to access it remotely from Command Center by navigating to Appliances, selecting the device in question and pressing "Remote Access".
