Application identification in Untangle SD-WAN Router

Overview

Untangle SD-WAN Router administration refers to Inferred Applications and Matched Applications in specific types of rules conditions and reports. Depending on the type of report or configuration you may see only one option or both. SD-WAN Router uses multiple technologies to identify an application from a session and this influences when you can use each option. In most cases the classification is the same, however there are occasions when the matched application differs from the inferred application. You can review both the matched and inferred applications associated to each session in the Sessions report.

Matched Applications

Matched Applications give you a historical view of application usage on the network. Examples include the Top Applications by Session Count and Top Applications by Time reports. SD-WAN Router classifies matched applications after establishing the session and the Internet route. In this instance, the classification engine can perform a thorough analysis of multiple packets within the session to accurately classify each application.

Inferred Applications

Untangle SD-WAN Router identifies Inferred Applications based on the first packet of a session. This method of classification applies to routing rules and is core to optimizing traffic flows and network performance. You can configure other rule types with Inferred Applications in addition to Matched Applications. When determining which method to use keep in mind that Matched Application conditions may be more accurate but require part of the session to flow through the router before the classification engine can associate an application to the session.

Details

Refer to the attached PDF document for a complete list of applications with their descriptions and other relevant details. The list applies to both Matched Applications and Inferred Applications.
